SATU and Climate Change: Committed to a Greener, Resilient Future
SATU (Social Advancement Through Unity) is deeply committed to addressing the impacts of climate change and fostering an eco-friendly environment for future generations. Recognizing the urgent threats posed by environmental degradation, climate-related disasters and unsustainable development, SATU has integrated climate action, environmental development and disaster preparedness as core components of its development mission.
Environmental Development Initiatives
Since its inception, SATU has promoted environmental sustainability across its operational areas. The organization recognizes that poverty, overpopulation, resource overuse and lack of awareness amplify ecological degradation. To combat this, SATU implements the following initiatives:
- Awareness building on population control, tree conservation and responsible fuel usage
- Domestic waste management training to reduce household-level pollution
- Sanitation and safe water access for underserved communities
- Tree plantation and social forestry to preserve biodiversity and combat deforestation
SATU’s environmental impact (till May 2025) includes:
Project Name | Quantity | Location | Partner |
Sanitation Development Project | 500 units | Gharinda, Tangail | PKSF |
Household Sanitation | 440 units | Bhaluka, Muktagacha, Jamalpur Sadar | PKSF |
Safe Water Supply (Deep Tube Wells) | 158 units | Madhupur | Self & Partner |
Hygienic Latrines (Family & Community) | 420 units | Golabari Union, Madhupur | Samriddhi |
Advanced Stove Distribution | 200 units | Bhuyapur, Tangail | LGED |
Seed Distribution | 4,316 units | Golabari Union | Samriddhi |
Social Forestry | 561,637 saplings | SATU working areas | Self-funded |
In addition, SATU is currently implementing the BDWASH project with PKSF in Mymensingh and Jamalpur to improve sanitation for 1,127 families and safe water for 110 families.
Disaster Management & Resilience Building
Bangladesh faces frequent natural calamities like floods, cyclones and river erosion. SATU believes that disaster response must go hand-in-hand with climate resilience. It has adopted a community-based disaster preparedness approach, ensuring people are informed, trained and equipped to withstand such shocks.
Key interventions include:
- Training beneficiaries on disaster preparedness and early warning response
- Awareness drives to promote ecological balance and reduce man-made vulnerabilities
- Emergency relief and medical support for disaster-hit families
- Rehabilitation aid, including microcredit, for rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods and replacing lost livestock or seeds
SATU continues to serve climate-affected regions, especially vulnerable river erosion zones, with a blend of emergency support and long-term recovery solutions — empowering communities to “build back better.”
SATU envisions a sustainable future where environmental protection and poverty reduction go hand in hand. Its climate-resilient development philosophy places communities at the center, ensuring they are not just recipients of aid but agents of lasting change.
